March 2010 newsletter

Note from the Director and Co-Director

Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf

A Nominations Committee chaired by Gail Winston and including Wendy Fischer, Mary O’Farrell, and Randy Thurman is working on the upcoming election. There are a number of Board positions that are coming open. You should have already received an email about the election and the call for nominations form. We encourage you to consider serving on the Board. Please think about nominating yourself or your colleagues for an open position. Individuals who have served have found it personally and professionally rewarding. It is a wonderful way to get to know individuals within the ICP&P community.

A proposal for putting the membership roster on the ICP&P website has been discussed and approved by the Board. The reason for having the membership roster on the website relates to the need to assist new Members-in-Training in their matriculation process. Specifically, this will assist the trainees in identifying potential faculty members to serve as advisors or supervisors. Also, since the Directory is published on an annual basis, the Board felt it was important to create a mechanism to keep the membership roster updated. In the Board discussions about this matter, it was agreed that participating on the website membership roster would be voluntary and that explicit approval would be required to participate. However, a question arose regarding whether the website membership roster would be open to anyone (the public) visiting the site or password protected so that only ICP&P members would have access. Our website designer indicates that there is not a significant cost difference between these two options. The question really is the amount of information accessible on the website.

It was decided that the Board needs feedback from the membership to determine how to proceed. We asked the study group leaders to discuss this in their group meetings and inform the Board of members’ preferences. If you are not in a study group, please contact Margo Silberstein or Dorothy Wine to weigh in on this matter. Russell Carr, MIT Board Representative, will check in with the trainees. The membership’s input on this matter is very important in determining how to proceed.

Note from the Secretary

Leslie Westbrook

In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some highlights from the February 18th meeting:

  • The Board voted that beginning in the fall of 2010 the Board will meet on the third Monday of each month at the ICP&P offices. If the third Monday is a holiday, the Board meeting for that month will be changed to another Monday.
  • Programs for 2010 – 2011 are in the planning stages and will include speakers Dennis Shelby, Diana Diamond and an expert in the area of Self Psychology and addictions.
  • A proposal for a year-long Institute on Contemporary Self Psychology for 2011-2012 was presented by Joe Lichtenberg. A program committee was appointed to further develop the program and an estimated budget. The committee will then report back to the Board in May for approval.
  • The Board voted to recommend to the membership that the bylaws be changed so that in the spring general election members-in-training can run and be elected to a regular two year Board position. Additionally, a separate election for the one year Member-in-Training representative will be held every September.
  • How to handle requests for reduced membership and conference fees was discussed. Requests for membership fee reductions are handled by the Membership Coordinator, along with the Co-Director. Requests for reduced conference fees are handled by the Program Coordinators.
  • Study groups for next year are being organized and will be announced in the spring.

Note from the Programs Co-Chairs

Sharon Ballard and Tripp Reed

We just completed the third RPI weekend and Saturday morning program which focused on Relational Perspectives on Clinical Interactions. Margaret Black, our featured speaker, was able to deepen our understanding of Relational theory and practice. Participants found her presentation style to be open and accessible. We hope integrating RPI and the Saturday morning program is working well for all who attend; we are always interested in your feedback on this.

The next program takes place Saturday morning, March 27th and features a presentation by Elizabeth Carr and Mauricio Cortina entitled Kohut and Bowlby: The Men, Their Ideas and the Clinical Exchange. This conference, which is free to members, will take place at the National 4-H Center, 7100 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase Maryland. Individuals who preregister can receive a copy of the paper prior to the conference. More information on the program.

Finally, we want to send a shout-out to Sheila Cahill, who is coordinating facility details for RPI. We missed her this past weekend as she recovered from surgery for a detached retina. We look forward to her rejoining us soon.

Note on Study Groups

Dorothy Wine

It's time to start thinking about study groups for the next two-year cycle beginning in September 2010. Study groups are a central aspect of ICP&P membership, providing a great opportunity to grow clinically, stay in touch with one another, and form new collegial relationships and friendships. Once people have been in a group together for almost two years, it can be difficult to think about starting afresh in a new group with new people. However, there are real benefits in joining a different study group, both in terms of exploring new areas of learning and in terms of getting to know other ICP&P members better. For ICP&P members who have not participated in a study group during this current cycle, this new cycle will be an ideal time to join one.

Please consider becoming a facilitator of a new study group. There are already some interesting new groups in the works, but since we have a growing membership, new leaders are always welcome. If you would like to discuss any ideas or learn more about what this entails, please feel free to call 571-723-6424 or email me at dawine99@aol.com.

The study group offerings for September 2010-May 2012 will be printed in the May newsletter. Members may sign up for a study group beginning on June 15th. More detailed instructions for how to do so will be provided in the May newsletter.

I am looking forward to the creation of some new study groups and to the continuation of some of the very fruitful groups that are now running.

Note on the Reduced Fee Referral Service

Susan Gorman

ICP&P has established a low fee referral service with two important goals in mind. The first is to help members-in-training fulfill their clinical requirements and the second is to provide reduced fee psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and couples therapy to the community. The latter goal is related to our mission as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The referral service has been active since September 2009 and we are currently receiving an average of two referrals a month.

The prospective patient or the referral source can reach me at 703-356-8839 or by email at susanlgorman@gmail.com. After I speak with the caller, I will refer the prospective patient to the appropriate member-in-training. This system was developed by the low fee referral service committee which consists of Kathy Beck, Linda Kanefield and I. We want to expand the reach of this service and need your help. If you have an affiliation with an academic program, an institution, medical service, or agency, we would appreciate your help in making our brochures available. Please feel free to contact me to discuss this further. In any event, please keep our members-in-training in mind when you can make a referral.

Note from ICP&P Administrator

Morgan Theriot

ICP&P has had two email addresses that have allowed you to communicate with me over the years - icpeastadmin@att.net and a subaccount icpeatadmin@att.worldnet.net (the difference being "worldnet" in the address). AT&T is streamlining their Internet services and will no longer have AT&T Worldnet Service available. Please check your email system to ensure that you are using icpeastadmin@att.net as the primary and only email address when contacting me. As of March 31, 2010 ICP&P will no longer be receiving emails at the worldnet.net address.
