February 2010 Newsletter

Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf

ICP&P’s yearly election is coming up quickly and a Nominations Committee is being formed. There are a number of Board positions which are coming open this election cycle including: Director, Co-Director, Treasurer, Coordinator(s) of Programs, Coordinator of Training, four Board Representatives, and one Member-in-Training (MIT) Board Representative. Many of the individuals serving on the Board over the last four years have told us how much they enjoy being on the Board and contributing to ICP&P through their efforts, ideas, and wise decision-making. If you are interested in learning more about any of these positions, please contact the person(s) currently holding the position to get an overview of the roles and responsibilities. We encourage you to consider running for a Board position.

The Board is in the process of planning the program offerings for 2010 – 2011. Last spring, the membership completed a continuing education needs assessment survey and we are using the survey findings in our planning process. In addition to the survey findings, some members have suggested specific speakers and programs. Your input and feedback is welcome and appreciated. Stay tuned for information about the new programs as decisions are finalized.

The application for CME credits for physicians has been submitted. The next step is a site visit by the accrediting body, The Medical Society of Maryland. The CME Committee Chaired by Allan Melmed and the CE Committee Chaired by the Eleanor Howe are preparing for the site visit. We will continue to keep the membership informed of all developments.

We have received phone calls from the membership concerning the status of the ICP&P Consultation and Referral Service. We are pleased to report that it is up and running. This service is designed to provide low fee psychotherapy, psychoanalytic, and couples therapy to the community. It is also designed to provide referrals to ICP&P Members-in-Training in order to assist them in meeting training requirements. Please consider assisting the MITs by making referrals through the service. There is information about the service on the website or contact Susan Gorman, Chair of the Consultation and Referral Service Committee. Our MITs are very appreciative of all referrals from the members.

Note from the Secretary
Leslie Westbrook

In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some highlights from the January 21st meeting:

  • The ICP&P budget continues to be in the black. The Board voted to change the end of the fiscal year from August 31 to June 30.
  • The Board is starting the election process by putting together an election committee.
  • The Board deferred a decision to change the night of the Board meeting. Two issues are the desire to meet in the ICP&P offices, the need to enable more ICP&P members to attend open meetings and to schedule the meetings on a day that did not preclude members in training from one of our training programs from either serving as a representative on the Board or attending meetings.
  • ICP&P is receiving calls of inquiry regarding both next year’s training programs and the low fee referral service.
  • Meeting jointly with two members of the Continuing Medical Education Committee, the Board discussed possible continuing education programs for next year. The results of the Continuing Education Needs Assessment Survey were reviewed and possible speakers for future conferences were considered. The Board is considering several proposals for new programs.

Note from the Programs Co-Chairs
Sharon Ballard and Tripp Reed

Scientific Day, on January 23rd, drew a large and enthusiastic crowd. We had the pleasure of hearing four outstanding presentations from ICP&P members, Russell Carr, Sheila Cahill, Rich Chefetz and Jeffrey Jay. The morning offered a very rich and engaging experience that stimulated our clinical thinking through multiple contemporary lenses and was heralded by many as one of our most successful Scientific Days to date.

On February 27, 2010, Margaret Black will present, The Creation of Analytic Space: Dissociation, Enactment and the Transformative Potential of the Analytic Relationship. Please register early as space is limited and we cannot accommodate walk-in registrants.

Elizabeth Carr and Mauricio Cortina will be present their fascinating new paper, Kohut & Bowlby: The Men, Their Ideas and the Clinical Exchange on March 27th. Their presentation will explore the historical and personal contexts that contributed to the major theoretical ideas of these prominent thinkers. The similarities and differences in their theoretical ideas and clinical approaches will be delineated and clinical material will be an integral part of the presentation.

Program planning for the 2010-2011 year is well underway. The Board recently reviewed the results of the ICP&P continuing education survey and we are using this data to inform our decisions in order to meet the needs and interests of our members.

New Member Introduction
Jeffrey Jay

Patricia Wolff Hartman comes to ICPP with unfettered enthusiasm in her wish to understand relational perspectives in contrast to object relations, after completing couples and family training at the Washington School. She applies her theoretical curiosity in her analytically-oriented therapy with children, adolescents, couples, and families in her clinical practice in Potomac. That she wishes to discern the theoretical distinctions between these approaches may result from the fact that she was born, raised, schooled, and trained - and then raised her own four children - all in Washington (Lafayette, Deal, Wilson, A.U., Maryland, Catholic) making her an expert on the dynamics of contained spaces and neighboring frameworks. Patricia, welcome to ICP&P.
