April 2010 newsletter
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
The ballots for the ICP&P election were mailed out the first week of April. The ballot will include the slate of candidates and statements from each individual with their qualifications and vision for ICP&P. A copy of the statements were also sent by email since one page of the statements was omitted from the mailing envelop. As an organization with a democratic governance structure, it is very important for members to participate. In order for the election to be ratified, a majority of the membership needs to vote. Please look for the ballot, make your selections, place the ballot in the enclosed envelope, and sign the back of the envelope before returning it. Please do your civic duty for ICP&P.
Joe Lichtenberg and Rosemary Segalla have proposed a four weekend institute with a focus on contemporary self psychology theory and practice to begin fall 2011. The Board requested more ideas including the program ideas, logistics, and budget. A committee has been formed under the leadership of Joe and Rosemary to develop a proposal. The committee includes Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf, Sharon Ballard, Shelia Cahill, Elizabeth Carr, Marie Hellinger, Tripp Reed, and Roger Segalla. Joe and Rosemary will present the proposal at the May Board meeting.
Another proposal has been brought to the Board from ICP&P members Steve Stein, Jean Gearon, and Bill Harman. They propose developing a series of short courses on mind/body practices and psychotherapy. The Board is requesting information about the course offerings. The Board looks forward to further discussions and to hearing more about their ideas.
Both of these proposals are examples of creative energy coming from within the organization. ICP&P has grown in response to the needs and suggestions for programs from our members. We view these new ideas as testimony to the continued vitality of our learning community.
Note from the Secretary
Leslie Westbrook
In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some highlights from the March 18th meeting:
- ICP&P remains financially in the black.
- Training Programs and conference speakers for next year are in the planning stages. On October 2, Dr. Dennis Shelby will present two cases of men who identify as gay but who have not been able to have a successful relationship. One will be a psychoanalytic case, the other will be a psychotherapy case.
- Steve Stein, Jean Gearon and Bill Harman proposed a series of four short courses on mind-body principles, self and relational psychotherapies, and neuroscience. Additional information has been requested.
- Dorothy Wine, Study Group Coordinator, is seeking a leader for a study group on Attachment Theory.
- The possibility of a fundraiser was considered and an educational/social program will be further developed.
- The Board and Nominating Committee will seek further nominations for the open Board positions by extending the deadline for receipt of names until March 22.
- The new website will contain the names of members of ICP&P along with professional information as selected by the individual members.
Note from the Programs Co-Chairs
Sharon Ballard and Tripp Reed
ICP&P’s Elizabeth Carr and Mauricio Cortina discussed their new paper, Kohut & Bowlby: The Men, Their Ideas and the Clinical Exchange on Saturday March 27th. Their engaging presentation provided us with the historical and personal backgrounds of these prominent thinkers in addition to comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences in their theoretical ideas. Rich clinical material was used to link theory and practice and prompted lively discussion with the audience.
Mark your calendars for ICP&P’s 16th Annual Conference on Saturday May 8, 2010. Held in conjunction with the last weekend of the Relational Perspectives Institute, this all day event will feature Karen Maroda, PhD and Steven Cooper, PhD. The conference, Countertransference Dilemmas: On Knowing and Being Known, is sure to offer a great deal of intriguing and thought-provoking ideas and issues that we all face in our clinical work. We want to remind our members that scholarship assistance is available for our conferences, if needed. Please contact Morgan Theriot at www.icpeast.org or 202-686-9300 ext 5.
Graduation is scheduled for Sunday May 23, 2010 at the Key Bridge Marriot. Your invitations will be in the mail in the coming weeks.
Note from Chair, Couples Training Program
Barbara Shapard
The Couples Training Program has a great group of experienced trainees for the September 2010 class. However some of the trainees are still in need of couples to treat. The trainees have been in an ongoing supervision group since September 2009. Please consider referring couples (including low fee referrals) to Susan Gorman susanlgorman@gmail.com or Mary O'Farrell mkofphd@yahoo.com. The couple will be assigned to one of the trainees. Thank you.
Note on Study Groups
Dorothy Wine
It's time to start thinking about study groups for the next two-year cycle beginning in September 2010. Study groups are a central aspect of ICP&P membership, providing a great opportunity to grow clinically, stay in touch with one another, and form new collegial relationships and friendships. Once people have been in a group together for almost two years, it can be difficult to think about starting afresh in a new group with new people. However, there are real benefits in joining a different study group, both in terms of exploring new areas of learning and in terms of getting to know other ICP&P members better. For ICP&P members who have not participated in a study group during this current cycle, this new cycle will be an ideal time to join one.
Please consider becoming a facilitator of a new study group. There are already some interesting new groups in the works, but since we have a growing membership, new leaders are always welcome. If you would like to discuss any ideas or learn more about what this entails, please feel free to call 571-723-6424 or email me at dawine99@aol.com.
The study group offerings for September 2010-May 2012 will be printed in the May and June Newsletters. Members may sign up for a study group beginning on June 15th. More detailed instructions for how to do so will be provided in the upcoming Newsletters.
I am looking forward to the creation of some new study groups and to the continuation of some of the very fruitful groups that are now running.
Note from Membership Co-Coordinator
Margo Silberstein
The Board has approved posting of member directory information on our website. When members renew for 2010-2011, they will be asked to indicate what information, if any, they would like included on the website. We will continue to produce paper copies of the directory in addition to what will be online. We hope that this will provide a convenient way for members to get information and facilitate referrals for Members-in-Training.
We continue to welcome new members as the year is winding to a close. Ted Billings, Dan Kimes, Deborah Newmark, Franca Posner, Seda Sumer-Richards, and Wendy Zack have joined recently. Please welcome these new ICP&P members. Our total membership now stands at 247.
