September 2009
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
Welcome back! We are excited about beginning another year at ICP&P and hope that you will join us at the Fall Potluck Dinner and Kick Off Event on September 11 at Chevy Chase Village Hall, 5906 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD 20815. The evening provides a chance to socialize, meet new members and catch up with one another. Members-in-Training and individuals who have joined within the last year will be introduced.
We have good news on our training programs. The Psychotherapy Training Program will begin with a class of seven thanks to the hard work of Co-Chairs Faith Lewis and Adina Shapiro. They took over from Roger Segalla last spring and have worked very hard throughout the summer to finalize plans for this year’s program. You will hear more about our new trainees in the Psychotherapy Training Program in the coming months.
In our Psychoanalytic Training Program, we have a new class with five Members-in-Training who are all new to ICP&P. We want to thank Sandra Hershberg, Chair, for her hard work in bringing together an exciting curriculum for the fall. You will hear more about our new trainees in the Psychoanalytic Program in the coming months.
The Couples Training Program is beginning a Study Group for prospective Members-in-Training and plans to begin a new class in the fall of 2010.
Anyone interested in developing a Short Course should contact Marilyn Fuchs at mpfuchs@aol.com. Marilyn is always open to new ideas for courses that can be offered to the membership.
We are pleased to announce that Eleanor Howe has agreed to assume Deborah Marks’ position as Chair of the Continuing Education Committee. They are working together right now and going through a transition period so that Eleanor can become fully immersed in this very important project. We know we speak for all the membership in expressing our appreciation to Deborah for her role in ensuring that our programs meet the standards of the credentialing organizations. Thank you, Deborah!
Note from the Programs Co-Chairs
Sharon Ballard and Tripp Reed
Get ready for a very exciting 2009-10 ICP&P line up of programs. We are very pleased to offer three Saturday morning conferences with the featured speakers of the Relational Perspectives Institute. On Saturday, October 10, Lewis Aron, PhD, will present Relational Perspectives: Origins, Growth and Frontiers. This program will provide a comprehensive overview of the history of Relational Psychoanalysis, including an examination of the historical distinction between psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Our second program of the year will take place on Saturday, December 5. In keeping with the theme of the RPI weekend, Relational Perspectives on Therapeutic Action, Donnel Stern, PhD, will present, Partners in Thought: Witnessing, Enactment and Unformulated Experience. We encourage you to register early for these conferences.
In addition to the three Saturday morning programs that coincide with the RPI, we will be offering two programs that are free of charge to ICP&P members. The first, Scientific Day, is scheduled for Saturday, January 23, 2010. We hope that many of you will utilize this unique opportunity to formally share your clinical ideas. Scientific Day has always been highly regarded by the ICP&P community and provides an extremely stimulating educational forum.
The second conference offered at no charge to our membership will be held on March 27, 2010. Elizabeth Carr and Mauricio Cortina will present their fascinating new paper, Kohut & Bowlby: The Men, Their Ideas and the Clinical Exchange. Stay tuned for more details.
Note from Chair, Couples Training Program
Barbara Shapard
I hope you all had a good summer and are ready to start the new year with enthusiasm!
We have had much interest in the Couples Training Program for the 2009-2010 year. Unfortunately, the class of eight students organized according to experience and training did not have the required number of couples in their practice to present for supervision. Therefore, ICP&P was not able to offer the training program this year. However, we were so impressed with this great group of students, the faculty organized a supervision group that will be led by John Gualtieri and Mary O’Farrell starting September 2009. In September of 2010 this student group will enroll in the formal Couples Training Program.
On a related note Peggy Miller and Sharon Ballard organized and started a couples supervision/study group last winter that is going very well. Tybe Diamond will be coordinating with ICP&P to offer a short course in countertransference issues and couples therapy. Janice Sanchez will be organizing a study/supervision group for those who are interested in the Couples Training Program in the future.
Note on Study Groups
Dorothy Wine
I am happy to report that study groups in ICP&P are active and full. This is wonderful, and speaks volumes about our members’ eagerness to learn more about theory as well as form strong connections with colleagues. Also, it is a testament to the generosity of study group leaders who have opened their homes and offices to fellow members.
Even though we are middle of a two year cycle, there have already been several requests for study groups in DC. Additionally, with the influx of new members from the RPI, there could be additional demand for study groups. We want to have a place for these new members to study and get better acquainted with colleagues.
At this time there is only one existing group with openings – Monica Callahan’s in Bethesda. In addition, two new groups are available this fall. Please read the full descriptions below.
We need more volunteers to step forward to lead new study groups. Perhaps you have thought about being a study group leader. There are many benefits such as saving time in travel, studying the topic of your choice, and setting the hour that works best with your schedule. A study group leader is not expected to understand the topic in depth, just to have the desire to learn more about the topic. If you would be interested in starting a group, please email me at dawine99@aol.com or call me at 571-723-6464.
Exploratory Psychodrama Study Group
Monica L. Callahan, PhD
2nd Saturday, 10:00am-noon in Bethesda, MD
We are evolving a process for the experiential exploration of our clinical work, using psychodrama-based enactment techniques in a self psychological and relational context. Relevant readings are shared as well. We welcome members who can commit themselves to the group process that makes this work possible, i.e., regular attendance, as much as possible, is very important to us.
Dissociative Phenomena
Wendy Berns, MSW
2nd Monday; 12:30-2:00 pm in Arlington, VA
This study group will focus on dissociative processes in clinical work, from the everyday experiences, which are ubiquitous, to the extreme experiences found in DID character structure. We will integrate ideas about dissociative phenomena with concepts found in attachment and relational theories. We will read books and articles about dissociation, such as the writings of Elizabeth Howell and Jodi Davies, and also work as a peer group, following material from our individual, couples, and group cases.
*** NEW STUDY GROUP AVAILABLE, based on interest. Possible topics are Treating the Partners of Bi-Polar Patients or Intimacy and Gender
Alison Howard, PsyD
Tuesdays from 12 - 1:30 in Washington, DC
The group will not exceed eight members and each member will be responsible for providing readings to the group that can be applied to our understanding of the topic. The first 45 minutes will be group discussion of papers/articles, and the last 45 minutes will be case vignettes. Structure of class is subject to change depending on the needs of participants. Contact Info: 202-368-3501 or AMHoward@starpower.net Office Address: 4000 Albemarle Street, NW Suite 510 Washington, DC 20016
