March 2009 newsletter
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
Our new website is now live. We encourage you to check it out by going to: www.icpeast.org. A new feature involves the capacity to register online for conferences using a credit card. This feature is available for the 2009 Annual Conference with Beatrice Beebe and the Relational Perspectives Institute. We are working with Victoria Pickering, website designer, and are fine-tuning the redesigned website. One way to think about this project is to view it as a work in progress. We welcome your input and ideas. Please contact Faith Lewis who has been leading this project to give your feedback.
The request for nominations has arrived by email and will include job descriptions for the open positions. Please see the article in this edition of the Newsletter for more information. We welcome your feedback on the nomination process. Our yearly elections create continuity and renewal as new persons join the Board and take on leadership responsibilities. We encourage you to consider becoming more involved in the ongoing life of ICP&P by running for a Board position or joining a committee such as the CE Committee, the Library Committee, or Outreach & Recruitment Committee.
There is another leadership position coming open within ICP&P. Roger Segalla has informed us that he must step down from his position of Chair of the Psychotherapy Training Program in order to meet the demands of leading the Relational Perspectives Institute. The Chair of the Psychotherapy Training Program is responsible for all aspects of that program. This position is appointed by the Board. We invite anyone who is interested to submit a resume to the ICP&P office. We will interview all candidates for this most important position. For more information about this position, please contact Roger, Maxine, or Elizabeth. By the way, we expect to have a first year class for the fall 2009.
On Sunday, February 22nd a group of 70 met together to honor and remember Fred Hilkert and Bruce Wine. Many people spoke about their contributions to the ICP&P community. As Joe Lichtenberg put it, both Fred and Bruce were big, strong, gentle men who gave generously of themselves, their time and their energy. From the beginning, both contributed in numerable ways – holding various Board positions, leading projects, teaching, developing curriculum, and so on. ICP&P would not be where we are today without their leadership and efforts. We salute them.
Note from the Secretary
Janice Sanchez
In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, options or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some of the highlights from the February 19th meeting:
- A correction was made to January’s minutes. For the conference held on February 1st that was organized by the Consortium for Psychoanalytic Research, Nancy Meyer was a discussant not a presenter.
- In preparation for our Board elections, Candy Detchon will serve as chair of the nominating committee.
- Roger Segalla will step down from being the Chair of the Psychotherapy Training Program as soon as a replacement is identified.
- ICP&P participates in a consortium of analytic organizations in the Baltimore-Washington area. Efforts are being made to develop a format for a community-wide master calendar for conferences and activities.
- A survey to identify member learning needs is being developed.
- Registration is going well for the Gary Rodin conference on the morning of March 7th. An afternoon session for our training programs will begin at 2:30.
- Graduation will be held on Sunday, May 31st at the Key Bridge Marriott.
- The Board voted to have Victoria Pickering do monthly updates for our website for six months.
Note from the Program Co-Chairs
Sharon Ballard and Tripp Reed
Please mark your calendars for our next big event – ICP&P’s 15th Annual Conference on Saturday, May 2, 2009, Capturing the Image of Mother-Infant Interaction: Links to the Clinical Encounter, with Beatrice Beebe, PhD. Dr. Beebe will explore face-to-face interactive processes that inform both mother-infant communication and adult treatment. In addition to the presentation of research on the origin of disorganized attachment in infancy, she will share her findings from a new project, "Videotaping the Analyst’s Face," in which patterns of vocal rhythm coordination between therapist and patient are subjected to microanalysis, alongside the verbal narrative. Early registration ends on April 15th. Registration and payment (credit card) will be easier than ever with our new website.
Note from Chair, Couples Training Program
Barbara Shapard
The Couples Training Program would like to invite you to our annual dinner on March 20, 2009 at the home of Barbara Shapard in Arlington, VA. All members-in-training from the training program, as well as ICP&P members who are interested in learning more about the Couples Training curriculum and program, are welcome to attend. Eat, share and enjoy! RSVP to Barbara Shapard at barbshapard@gmail.com or call 703-243-1804.
Note from the Nominations and Elections Committee
Gail Winston, Judy Marx, Nancy Wolfson and Candace Detchon - Chair
It is time for nominations to the ICP&P Board for the term May 2009—May 2011. The following positions are open: Secretary, Treasurer, Coordinator of Membership, and Board Representative.
In 2006, the Board voted to have yearly elections (previously they were held every two years), but with only some of the Board positions turning over at the same time, thus providing some continuity in the leadership—instead of a totally new Board every two years.
With one exception, all Board positions are for two-year terms. Since the position of Member-in-Training Board Representative is a one-year term, this position is also open, but is voted on only by members-in-training, and will be voted on in the fall after training classes have formed.
We encourage you to consider running for the Board, and thought it might be easier for you to think about this if you had some information about the positions that are open.
- Secretary: attends all Board meetings and records the actions and minutes of the meeting; puts a brief summary in the monthly newsletter.
- Treasurer: responsible for oversight of the Institute’s operating finances and investments, keeps track of our financial position, and prepares financial statements for Board meetings.
- Coordinator of Membership: responsible for enrollment and orientation of new members. Also oversees the activities of the study groups and the Library. In the past, this job has sometimes been shared by two people (see below).
- Board Representative: assist in the planning, review, and decisions of the Board. The Board Rep serves as a liaison between the membership and the Board, ensuring that the concerns of members are brought to the Board, and that members are informed of Board decisions. There are a total of six board representatives, but only one position is currently open.
Please also talk to current Board members in these positions:
- Secretary: Janice Sanchez, LCSW
- Treasurer: Janet Dante, LCSW-C
- Coordinators of Membership: Judy Hoffman, LCSW and Kathy Beck, LICSW
- Board Representatives: Lauren Brandt, PhD, Mary Jean Kane, LCSW, Faith Lewis, LCSW, Leslie Westbrook, PhD, Jeffrey Jay, PhD, and Leslie Smith, Ph.D.
The Board meets monthly from September through May; the time and place of each regular meeting is decided at the first meeting of the new Board. Feel free to contact any member of the Nominations and Elections Committee if you have any questions.
New Member Introductions
Jeffrey Jay
Nancy Hartsock, PsyD, is a mental health professional who appears to have doggedly pursued a quest for the best analysis of human behavior: long before her current work as the only staff psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at the Walter Reed Medical Center, Dr. Hartsock was an administrator at the National Academy of Science where she administered grants to more than 20 university training programs. Unsatisfied with policy and administration, she returned to graduate school and, ten years ago, became a student member of ICP&P. She left the area for a psychology internship at the University of Maine’s Counseling Center. When she returned, she worked at the Women’s Center in Vienna and pursued an understanding of Self and Relational psychologies, continuing her movement from the macro to an intimate understanding of human behavior. Now, she is called upon to bring all of her experience together to help in training and clinical work at Walter Reed. She has also returned to ICP&P with a hope of pursuing further training in one of the therapy programs. Nancy has a private practice in Chevy Chase and plans to offer long-term group work, perhaps in conjunction with another ICP&P member.
When asked what she looks forward to, Melinda Salzman says returning to modern dance, having once studied dance at Sarah Lawrence College. But now, paused in that leap, with two college age children, she maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Silver Spring, focusing on adults, with a special interest in couples’ treatment. She also focuses on issues of loss which sprang from her affiliation with the William Wendt Center (then the St. Francis Center), in 1985. From there it was a short step to facilitating grief groups each October at the Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial Weekend. And, along with Flora Ingenhousz, who was featured here last month, Melinda works (dare we say "choreographs") Stroke Survivor Groups with the Montgomery Stroke Association. Her interest in ICP&P centers on the educational opportunities and the caliber of people in the membership, and she is joining a couples study group. In our welcome, we hope ICP&P provides a soft professional landing, as well as a resilient springboard for those artistic desires.
News and Notes
Lauren Brandt
The Board has asked me to initiate a new column for the Newsletter that provides an opportunity for the membership to share news of transitions and accomplishments with the ICP&P community. While for the purposes of this column, the boundary between personal and professional is not yet firm, we’d like to hear about presentations, publications and new initiatives.
In this spirit, we’d like to congratulate Heidi Block on the birth of Max River Heckerblock, born February 9, 2009. Heidi writes, "He’s gorgeous and can’t wait to come to an ICP&P event!"
Congratulations also to Heidi’s suitemate, Ashley Seeger, on the birth of Josephine Emilia Seeger on October 24, 2008.
New father Keith Erickson writes "Ella Isabel Erickson was born at home on December 31, 2008. She was welcomed by 2-year-old Emily, who has been learning that being a big sister evokes very mixed feelings. Ella has struggled with reflux disease and is just now feeling a bit better and discovering there is more to life than abdominal pain. Her sleep-deprived and often distraught parents are relieved and grateful for her recovery and for having been entrusted with such a wise, patient, and vulnerable little soul."
Thanks to the three of you for your response to my last-minute inquiry. We look forward to meeting Max, Josephine and Ella. Please forward to lbjls@rcn.com news of (noncommercial) activities you’d like to share. Looking forward to hearing from you.
