June 2009 newsletter

Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf

We are pleased to announce that Faith Lewis and Adina Shapiro are the new Co-Chairs of the Psychotherapy Training Program, effective immediately. They have hit the ground running and are gearing up for the fall. We look forward to their energy and creativity as they take on this very important role. We also want to express our appreciation to Roger Segalla for serving as Chair of the Psychotherapy Program for the last eighteen months. He worked diligently on behalf of the program and generously gave his time and energy.

We just completed the 2008–2009 Academic year which culminated in our graduating seven individuals from ICP&P’s Training Programs on May 31st. The ceremony was a joyful occasion for the graduates and their families as well as for the entire community. We are justly proud of our three excellent training programs. At the open houses held last month a number of prospective trainees attended. All three programs are accepting applications and it is not too late to consider training. Please see the ICP&P website for further information and to download an application. You can also contact Susan Gorman, Coordinator of Training, susanlgorman@gmail.com or (703)356-8839] who can put you in contact with the right persons to talk with regarding training possibilities.

ICP&P is a member of the Consortium for Psychoanalytic Research, Inc. and Ann Aukamp has served as ICP&P’s representative for many years. We appreciate her hard work on this worthwhile endeavor. Ann needs to step down from her participation in this group and we are looking to find someone to serve as ICP&P’s representative to the consortium. This is a good opportunity for someone who is interested in or actively engaged in research. Please contact Maxine or Elizabeth to learn more.

We had a wonderful year on the program side of our operations and we want to thank Sharon Ballard and Tripp Reed for their hard work pulling it all together. You may have noticed how well all the conferences were attended and we wanted to recognize Leslie Westbrook for the outstanding job she did in organizing and placing advertisements in appropriate mental health publications. Leslie is taking over as Secretary and we need someone to take on the responsibility of placing ads. To learn more about what is involved, contact Leslie [lesliewestbrook@verizon.net or (301)946-7576]. Either Elizabeth or Maxine will be delighted to talk more about this with you.

.

We are ending the year on a high note and we want to thank everyone for all their efforts on behalf of ICP&P. We are looking forward to a very exciting year in the fall with the beginning of the Relational Perspectives Institute, new classes in our training programs, and all the various other learning opportunities for members via conferences and study groups. Our fall pot luck is set for September 11 so please save the date. We wish you a wonderful and healthy summer.

Note from the Secretary
Leslie Westbrook

In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some highlights from the May 21st meeting:

  • Membership now stands at 205.
  • The Relational Institute presently has 57 paid participants, and the Board hopes the final registration will be 80-100. The Board determined the fees for participants who only attend the Saturday programs and the Annual Conference.
  • There were a number of issues related to the election. In particular, issues relative to the process for the election of the Members-in-Training representative were discussed. There will be further discussion at the September Board meeting.
  • Professionals working at agencies who might find the membership fee prohibitive can speak to the Membership Chair about a reduced membership fee. ICP&P will not turn potential members away based on financial considerations.
  • A short-term group for agency professionals introducing relational and mind-body concepts is under development.
  • The Open Houses were received well. The Annual Conference also went well, with 135 registrants.
  • The two free conferences in 2009-2010 will be Scientific Day and a presentation by Elizabeth Carr and Mauricio Cortina on Kohut and Bowlby.
  • Board Meetings, always open to members, will be on the third Thursday of each month at 7:45 p.m., at the home of Faith Lewis, unless otherwise announced.

Note from the Chair, Couples Training Program
Barbara Shapard

Congratulations to the 2009 graduating class of the Couples Training Program: Betsy Hirschel, LCSW; Alison Howard, PsyD; Cynthia Post, PhD; Susan Horne Quatannens, LCSW; Deborah Shulman, LICSW, BDC; and Leslie Smith, PhD.

The faculty enjoyed working with such an articulate energetic group of trainees!

Note from Co-Chairs, Membership
Judy Hoffman and Kathy Beck

It has been our pleasure to be the co-directors of membership for the past five years. We are handing over the reins to Margo Silberstein and Dorothy Wine, who will (among other responsibilities) be welcoming new members and arranging study groups, respectively. Thank you to Margo and Dorothy!

Note on Study Groups
Dorothy Wine

Study groups are a central aspect of ICP&P membership, providing a great opportunity to grow relationships and friendships. The current study group cycle runs until May 2010. At that time many groups will continue, and with our membership growing, we anticipate adding new study groups. Please consider become a study group facilitator. If you would like to discuss any ideas or learn more about what this entails, please feel free to call me. We can use groups especially in Northern Virginia.

I am looking forward to the creation of some new study groups and to the continuation of some of the very fruitful groups that are now running. There is additional information about study groups on the ICP&P website. Please contact me with any questions you may have about study groups.

Relational Perspectives Institute

Register now for the 2009-2010 Relational Perspectives Institute (RPI)! To learn more about the institute please visit our brand new website at: http://icpeast.org/relational.htm

Don't forget the RPI is a one year program that will not be on-going in the way the Psychotherapy, Psychoanalytic and Couples Training Programs are structured. So this is your chance to have an in-depth, intensive and interactive immersion into Relational Psychoanalysis. If you have questions about the RPI please contact the Chair, Roger J. Segalla, Jr., Ph.D. at: rsegalla@verizon.net

Additionally, in response to requests from our membership, ICP&P is currently setting up payment plans for those individuals who would like to register for the Relational Perspectives Institute but are unable to pay the full tuition in one lump sum. If you would like to take advantage of this payment option please submit a payment plan via email to our administrator Morgan Theriot at icpeastadmin@att.net

Once your payment planned has been approved by the ICP&P Treasurer, a minimum deposit of $300 will be required to finalize your registration. All payment plans must provide for complete payment by 12/31/09.

Finally, ICP&P is also making a limited number of partial scholarships available to those individuals who can demonstrate financial need. Please contact Morgan for a scholarship application form. The deadline for submitting scholarship applications is 7/1/2009.

Reminder! We have initiated a new column for the Newsletter that provides an opportunity for the membership to share news of transitions and accomplishments with the ICP&P community.
