April 2009 Newsletter
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
By the time you receive this Newsletter, the ballots for the 2009 election will have been mailed. Once you receive it, please complete your ballot and return it in the enclosed envelope. We appreciate the number of people who accepted nominations to the Board and are interested in becoming more involved in the governance and operations of ICP&P. Every election brings a sense of renewal as we welcome new members to the Board. We also want to thank the members of the Nominations Committee: Candy Detchon, Chair; Gail Winston, Judy Marx, and Nancy Wolfson.
Another important matter for your consideration involves a survey that focuses on assessing the continuing education needs of the membership. You will receive an email explaining how to access Survey Monkey; this format should be familiar to you as we previously used it for the Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing and training surveys. Please take a few minutes to click on the link and complete the survey. Your input is very important to planning future programs and conferences. The survey was developed by Brad Brenner and Maxine with input from Allan Melmed, Marilyn Fuchs, Deborah Marks and Elizabeth.
The Continuing Medical Education Committee, chaired by Allan Melmed, is in the final phase of completing an application to MedChi so that ICP&P can become an authorized to provider of CME credit to physicians who attend educational programs. The committee hopes to finalize the application, including the required supplemental information, by the end of May. This committee has been working together since last summer on the project and holds monthly meetings to develop the required materials and complete the application. The committee includes Allan, Deborah Marks, Dorothy Wine, and Elizabeth.
Note from the Secretary
Janice Sanchez
In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory. Here are some highlights from the March 19th meeting:
- There will be an open house for all our Training Programs on May 13th at 7: 30 at the home of Faith Lewis.
- The Psychoanalytic Training Program will have its own open house on May 6th at 7:30, also at the home of Faith Lewis.
- Graduation will be on May 31st. There will be one graduate from the Psychoanalytic Training Program, and six graduates from the Couples Training Program.
- The spring conference brochures have been mailed out, and it will be possible to register for this online: online registrant pay for Eventbrite and ICP&P is charged a transaction fee by PayPal.
- Ideas are being discussed for two free conferences for next year. One of them will be Scientific Day.
- Victoria Pickering is continuing to help us with our website. She suggests we do things to increase our visibility on the web (i.e. add past conferences, links to some of our favorite writings, Wikipedia, etc.)
- ICP&P Library hours are by appointment.
Note from the Program Co-Chairs
Sharon Ballard and Tripp Reed
Our March 7th conference with Gary Rodin was a huge success. We had over 125 participants, and almost a third were non-members. The presentation was illuminating, poignant and thought-provoking as we examined mortality and end of life issues that impact all of us both personally and professionally.
Please mark your calendars for ICP&P’s 15th Annual Conference on Saturday, May 2, 2009, Capturing the Image of Mother-Infant Interaction: Links to the Clinical Encounter, with Beatrice Beebe, PhD. Dr. Beebe will explore face-to-face interactive processes that inform both mother-infant communication and adult treatment. In addition to the presentation of research on the origin of disorganized attachment in infancy, she will share her findings from a new project, "Videotaping the Analyst’s Face," in which patterns of vocal rhythm coordination between therapist and patient are subjected to microanalysis, alongside the verbal narrative. Early registration ends on April 15th. Registration and payment (credit card) will be easier than ever with our new website.
By now, you have received the Relational Perspectives Institute brochure in the mail. While we hope and expect that many ICP&P members will choose to participate in the Institute, we have received several inquiries about whether the Saturday morning portion of the weekends will be open for registration as an ICP&P program. We anticipate that ICP&P members who are not part of the Relational Perspectives Institute will be able to register and pay for these morning presentations. Please note that the last Saturday of the Relational Perspectives Institute will coincide with ICP&P’s 16th Annual Conference.
In addition to RPI, we will be offering two Saturday morning programs next year that will be free for members. One will be Scientific Day; and the other is under discussion and will be finalized shortly.
