Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr & Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf

The 2008 Nominations and Elections Committee is in the process of contacting the nominated individuals to determine whether they will agree to be placed on the ballot. We want to thank those of you who have submitted nominations for your commitment to the democratic process within ICP&P.  The ballots will be mailed out in early April. We ask you to complete the ballot and return it to the ICP&P office in the enclosed envelope. Every member’s participation in this election is important to continued democratic governance and organizational renewal. We want to express our appreciation to the committee (Margo Silberstein, Chair; Beth Altman; Alexandra Kaghan, and Tripp Reed) for their fine work during this election cycle.

Progress is being made on a project in which ICP&P will apply to become an approved provider of Continuing Education Credit for Physicians (CME credits). The Board is committed to this project believing it to be important to our physician members as well as helping us increase participation by psychiatrists and other physicians at our conferences and in our training programs. Dorothy Wine is the Board contact on this matter and Allan Melmed is taking the lead on the application process. Thomas Hoffman has also put some energy into this. We appreciate their efforts and look forward to making progress on this important project.

Thank you for your responses to the training survey. Roger Segalla, Chair of the ICP&P Psychotherapy Training Program will be presenting the results of this survey at the April Board meeting. Following that, Roger will share the results in the May Newsletter.

Over 50% of members have completed the PEP survey. The Board wishes to hear from as many members as possible on this very important matter in order to determine next steps. If you have not completed the survey, please look for an email and take a few minutes to provide your input.

Note from the Secretary
Janice Sanchez

In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting will be published in the Newsletter.  If there are items about which you have questions, opinions, or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member.  We welcome your input.  All Board members are listed at the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website.

Here are some highlights from our March 20, 2008 meeting:
  • Invitations are available for our April 26 outreach event.
  • Susan Gorman reported to the Board that plans are underway for an ICP&P Low Fee Referral Service.  The purpose of this service is to help members-in-training find patients and to fulfill a community need for low fee psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.
  • Four very interesting programs are being planned for 2008-09.
  • The PEP survey will be sent again to request that those who have not responded will do so.  (101 members out of 183 have responded.)
  • A new cycle of study groups will be starting in September.
  • Our website needs to be revamped.  Help with this would be appreciated.
  • Nominations for new officers are in.

Note from the Program Coordinators
Sharon Ballard and Peggy Davis

We had a great turnout for our March 15th conference when Christine Courtois, PhD presented Relational Healing Approaches to Complex Trauma. Almost half of the audience was from outside the ICP&P membership, a testament that our programs are reaching the larger mental health community and eliciting interest in our organization.

The next big event is our 14th Annual Conference, scheduled for Saturday May 3, 2008, featuring Jessica Benjamin, PhD and Malcolm Slavin, PhD. The title of the presentation is Recognition, Otherness and the Human Condition: Two Perspectives on Mutual Influence, Over-Accommodation and Therapeutic Change. During the afternoon session, Roger Segalla, PhD, Chair of the ICP&P Psychotherapy Program, will present a clinical case for discussion. You should be receiving the conference brochure in the mail shortly.

Graduation is scheduled for Sunday morning, May 18th and will again be held at the Key Bridge Marriott. Please plan to join your ICP&P colleagues in honoring our graduates.

Note on Study Groups
Kathy Beck

It’s time to start thinking about study groups for the next two-year cycle beginning in September 2008.  Study groups are a central aspect of  ICP&P membership, providing a great opportunity to grow clinically, to stay in touch with one another, and to form new collegial relationships and friendships.  Once people have formed bonds after meeting together for almost two years, it can be difficult to think about starting afresh in a new group with new people.  However, there are real benefits to joining a different study group, both in terms of exploring new areas of learning and in terms of getting to know other IPC&P members better.  For IPC&P members who have not participated in a study group during this current cycle, this new cycle will be an ideal time to join one.

Please consider becoming a facilitator of a new study group.   There are already some interesting new groups in the works, but since we have a growing membership, new groups are always welcome.  If you would like to discuss any ideas or learn more about what this entails, please feel free to call me.

The study group offerings for September 2008 - May 2010 will be printed in the May newsletter.  Members may sign up for a study group beginning on June 15th.  More detailed instructions for how to do so will be provided in May.

I am looking forward to the creation of new study groups and the continuation of some of the very fruitful groups that are now running.

Recognition, Otherness and the Human Condition:
Two Perspectives on Mutual Influence, Over-Accommodation, and Therapeutic Change

with

Jessica Benjamin, PhD and Malcolm Slavin, PhD

And a Clinical Presentation by Roger Segalla, PhD

How do we learn to immerse ourselves fully in our patient’s experience while simultaneously maintaining what is vital and useful in our own separate subjectivity, our therapeutic authority – ultimately our otherness?  This central challenge for relational therapists reflects the larger, universal, human tension around creating both a clear sense of self and a deep connectedness with others.

Drs. Benjamin and Slavin will convey their different approaches to holding the tension between appreciating the valid adaptive meanings – the major elements of truth – in the patient’s differently organized subjective universe while recognizing the positive value to the patient of experiencing the analyst as a real, complex other.

Our presenters will briefly outline some of their views, and then move on to clinical narratives in which they and the participants can dialogue about these issues in the context of real treatment relationships.  Dr. Segalla will present a case that Benjamin and Slavin will each discuss, dialoging with the presenter, each other and the audience.

IARPP 2008 Annual Conference

Co-Sponsored & Hosted by: Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (ICP&P)

Relational Perspectives on Attachment Theory and Psychoanalytic Process

May 29 – June 1, 2008

Sheraton Baltimore City Center Hotel

Baltimore, Maryland, USA

The conference title is Relational Perspectives on Attachment Theory and Psychoanalytic Process.  The Relational Perspectives, derived from British Object Relations Theory, Interpersonal Theory, and theory emerging from clinical experience, provides a large umbrella for diverse conceptions about human interchanges.  Attachment theory, derived from Bowlby’s Evolutionary Theory and supported by extensive research, provides a compelling picture of dyadic relations centering on the striving for security.  Our conference asks the exciting question:  What does each theory have to offer the other?  What are overlaps, similarities and differences (Panel 1)?  Since both Relational Perspective and Attachment Theory have immediate application to clinical work, can we discern synergy in their use for treating a wide range of patients (Panel 2), and especially those who have suffered traumatizing experiences (Panel 3)?  In addition there will be paper sessions and a variety of workshops.

This conference is presented by the International Association of Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and co-sponsored by the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (ICP&P).

Three Plenary Panels:

  • Relational Perspectives and Attachment Theory: A Theoretical and Clinical Overview
  • The Contribution of An Attachment and A Relational Perspective to An Exploratory Treatment:  A Clinical Observation
  • An Attachment and Relational Perspective in the Treatment of Traumatized Patients

Speakers include:

Lewis Aron Nino Dazzi Gianni Nebbiosi
Anthony Bass Jody Messler-Davies Malcolm Salvin
Jessica Benjamin Susi Federici-Nebbiosi Judith Guss Teicholz
Margaret Black Hazel Ipp David Wallin
Steven Cooper Horst Kaechele Mauricio Cortina
