January 2012
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Roger Segalla and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
As this new year gets under way, Maxine and I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the efforts of a couple of hardworking committees that toil away behind the scenes to keep ICP&P ticking along. We would also like to announce the creation of new committee and invite you, our membership, to become involved.
First, we'd like to thank and acknowledge the diligent work of the ICP&P Branding Committee. This committee was charged with the task of developing a new visual image for ICP&P. The committee worked for almost two years discussing the question of the ICP&P brand, interviewing and hiring a suitable graphic designer, and finally selecting a design that graphically represented ICP&P as a forward thinking contemporary psychoanalytic institute (see sample at left). Because real care and thoughtfulness went into this task, the Branding Committee put in many hours working through this process. This committee was very capably chaired by Sharon Ballard and included, Elizabeth Carr, Jeffery Jay, Tripp Reed, Roger Segalla and Maxine Arnsdorf. Thank you all! Look for this new logo to be incorporated into letterhead, our websites, emails, announcements, etc. in the very near future.
We would also like to acknowledge the very capable and carefully diligent CME committee which is chaired by Allan Melmed and includes Eleanor Howe, Elizabeth Carr, and Deborah Marks. This committee has been hard at work assembling a vast complexity of documentation, forms and data needed for our first site visit by the MedChi CME survey committee. This is a very important site visit that is critical to our continued accreditation as a Continuing Medical Education provider. We are very much in debt to all the members of this committee who have spent countless hours preparing for this visit. Thanks so much for all your hard work!
Finally, we would like to announce the creation of an IAPSP Conference Committee, which is being assembled to prepare for the upcoming International Association of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology International Conference. ICP&P is the host institute for this conference which will take place in Washington beginning Thursday, October 17 through Sunday, October 21. This is a great opportunity to become more involved with the IAPSP, a great organization that attracts the top names in Self Psychology from around the world. If you would like to become involved please contact our administrator Morgan Theriot at: icpeastadmin@att.net.
Board Meeting Summary
In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Alison Howard took notes during the December meeting and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdrof has summarized them below:
- Several program issues were discussed, including: the Dec 10 couples speaker and the feedback received from the evaluations; the upcoming SPI program in February; the decision to join other analytic institutes in the metropolitan area in co-sponsoring a performance of the play "Red" at Arena stage; and possible speakers for the 2012 - 13 program year.
- A decision was reached regarding the Bruce Wine Memorial Conference, which will be titled "The Role of Play in All Things Human". The conference is scheduled to dovetail with the IAPSP conference in October 2012 and will feature several international speakers
- Dates for graduation were discussed. Susan Gorman will consult with the Chairs of the Psychotherapy and Psychoanalytic programs.
- Several new members joined in the last month. The Board discussed growth and the impact a larger membership has on the culture and the functioning of the institute.
- The development of a more systematic fundraising strategy is in the planning stages.
- Committee activities included a report from the Outreach Committee, the ongoing search for someone to lead the Library Committee, and the formation of an Internet Committee to be chaired by MIT representative Liz Merrill

Note From Psychoanalytic Training Program
Reading Group for Prospective Members-in-Training
Elizabeth M. Carr and Linda Kanefield
We are pleased to announce that we are holding a series of meetings for anyone interested in learning more about the ICP&P Psychoanalytic Training Program. For the first two sessions, we have chosen an exciting group of papers organized around the issue of mutual recognition in the analytic encounter, including papers by Donna Orange, Jessica Benjamin, Malcolm Slavin and Phillip Ringstrom. In this series of papers, the authors engage in a complex examination of the interface between Orange's and Benjamin's broad understandings of the concept of recognition in development and in clinical interaction. We believe our discussion will be of great value to those individuals who will be attending the February 4, 2012 Self Psychology Institute session featuring Donna Orange speaking on the subject of Engagement and Developmental Enactments. All are welcome!
During the reading group, there will also be an opportunity to ask questions and talk about the experience of doing psychoanalytic training at ICP&P. The meetings will be on Sunday afternoons from 3:30 - 5:30 on January 22, February 26, and March 25. We will meet at the home of Elizabeth Carr at 701 Woodside Parkway in Silver Spring, Maryland. If you are interested, or know anyone who is interested in joining us for the reading group, please contact Linda Kanefield at 301-654-2645 or kaneschn@gmail.com. We will send the readings to those who would like to participate in the group. If you want further information, please contact Linda.
This has been an exciting year for the ICP&P Psychoanalytic Training Program as several of our current trainees have written, published, and had papers accepted to be presented at international conferences. Russ Carr, MD gave the plenary talk at the IAPSP Conference in Los Angeles, in October 2011 and Shoshana Ringel, PhD will be giving a paper at the IARPP conference in NYC in March 2012. We are very proud of them and believe their accomplishments speak to the creative and stimulating atmosphere of our training program.

As an MIT, Joanne is delighted to deepen her involvement in the ICP&P community and excited to further integrate contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy with her ongoing interests in interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, Gestalt, and approaches that integrate the cognitive, affective, and sensorimotor dimensions of experience.
Scientific Day
Richard Ogden
If you are thinking about submitting a paper for consideration for this year's Scientific Day, there is still time to let me know. This is a great opportunity to present your ideas to and to receive feedback from other ICP&P members in a supportive and collegial environment. Even if you do not have a completed paper or abstract to send in right now, please contact me at my office at (301) 986-5499 or by email at rlogden@hotmail.com to talk about the possibility or to ask any questions that you might have.
As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, ICP&P's Scientific Day happens every other year and this year it is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, 2012. It is a half-day event. Each presenter will read a paper, after which there will be time for discussion with the audience. There are no restrictions in terms of theoretical orientation, format, and topic. Please keep in mind that the paper does not have to be a completed project but might be a discussion of ideas that you are still considering and working with.
I hope that you will consider participating in this event.
Please submit material to: ICP&P, Attn: Morgan Theriot, Administrator, 4601 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 8, Washington, D.C. 20008 or fax to 202-232-2565 (fax), or by email to icpeastadmin@att.net. Please contact me at (301) 986-5499 or rlogden@hotmail.com if you have any questions.
Save the Date New Program Offering
Elizabeth M. Carr
ICP&P is pleased to announce that we have accepted an offer from the Washington School of Psychiatry (The Attachment and Human Development Center and the Seminar on Developmental Psychotherapy) to co-sponsor a conference featuring Alan Sroufe, PhD to be held on Friday evening March 16 and all day Saturday, March 17, 2012. Dr. Sroufe is internationally recognized as one of the foremost contributors to our understanding of how attachment relationships and developmental processes influence normal and pathological development through the life span. Dr. Sroufe's Friday lecture is titled: The Legacy of Early Development as Seen from the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk and Adaptation and is based on the findings from one of the largest and most comprehensive studies undertaken. The all day Saturday conference is titled: Implications for the Practice of Psychotherapy of Approaches Informed by Attachment Theory and a Developmental Perspective and will feature presentations and discussions by Alan Sroufe, June Sroufe, Mauricio Cortina, Elizabeth Carr, Marie Hellinger and members of the WSP developmental psychotherapy study group. We believe this is an exciting learning opportunity for ICP&P members interested in the clinical application of developmental research. A link to the conference brochure is on the ICP&P website.
New Member Introduction
Martha Blechar Gibbons
ICP&P welcomes Jessica Brown, who completed her analytic training as a psychiatrist with the Baltimore Washington Institute of Psychoanalysis in 2006. For a period following this graduation she limited her psychiatric practice to allow time to focus on her family, including her now 9 and 15 year old daughters. As a new member, she finds ICP&P's "open mindedness in different ways of approaching psychoanalysis" to be appealing. Jessica also appreciates that the organization appears to be "made up of people who think in diverse ways."
Jessica is the recipient of the Lewis B. Hill award, presented by the Baltimore Washington Institute for Psychoanalysis to acknowledge excellence in psychoanalytic writing, and she has presented this paper at the Baltimore Washington Institute. Among her many interests, Jessica has experience in teaching and supervision and would like to develop herself further in these areas.
Looking forward to becoming involved in ICP&P, Jessica acknowledges that "you need a supportive environment to help you do the work a good network to lean on." In her practice at 3000 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., in Washington, D.C. she provides psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to adults of college age and older, promoting self-exploration and self-development.
