Current Newsletter
Summer 2011
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Roger Segalla and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
Though you are probably focused on upcoming vacations or enjoying the summer, we are going to ask you to think ahead to fall and the programs that are being offered by ICP&P for 2011-2012. Many of you have registered for the Self Psychology Institute, which consists of 4 full day Saturday programs from 8:30am to 6:00pm and optional 3 hour Friday afternoon pre-conference sessions on specific topics. Participants will hear outstanding speakers and case conferences and also have the opportunity for consistent small group discussion experiences that were so valued during the Relational Perspectives Institute. If you are interested in registering for the Institute, please contact Morgan or register online as space is limited.
Of course, there will be options available for those of you who are not registering for the full institute. First, the Friday afternoon pre-conference sessions are open to anyone and registration for individual sessions or the package of all 4 meetings is still available. Space permitting, we will open up the individual Saturday SPI sessions. Registration is now being accepted for the Saturday, September 17 program featuring Dr. Frank Lachmann. This Saturday's conference is titled: The Growth of the Individual: A View Through An Empathic Lens. The program will run from 9:00am to 4:00 pm for 5 CE credits and will cost $180.00 for ICP&P members, $205.00 for non-members and $80.00 for students.
We also have a rich slate of short course offerings planned for the first half of the year. Elsewhere in the Newsletter, there is a flyer for an infant observation course offered by Jaedene Levy. Other offerings, which will be described in future Newsletters, will include courses on couples therapy and mind-body integration.
Finally, spaces are available in the psychotherapy training program starting in September. If you are interested, please contact Susan Gorman, Coordinator of Training, at 703-356-8839 or susnlgorman@gmail.com soon.
Note on Study Groups
Debra Caplowe
As many of you know, study groups are a central aspect of ICP&P membership, providing a great opportunity to grow clinically, stay in touch with one another, and form new collegial relationships and friendships. ICP&P currently has several study groups seeking members, and if you have been thinking of joining one, now is an ideal time to do so.
If you are interested in joining one of these groups, please contact the Study Group Leader directly.
Intersubjectivity Study Group
Janet Dante, MSW janet.dante@yahoo.com; 301-652-5507
3rd Friday of every month (Sept - June), 10am to 11:30am
5207 Hampden Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814
This study group started last September. The focus of the group is on developing and deepening our capacity to work intersubjectively with our patients. The format of the group is to discuss the reading, and to try to deepen our understanding through bringing in our own clinical examples and challenges. The book we will be reading this coming year is Toward an Emancipatory Psychoanalysis: Brandchaft's Intersubjective Vision by Doctors, Sorter, and Brandchaft. (2010).
Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis
Adina Shapiro, LCSW,adinsh@aol.com; 703-761-3939
4th Friday of every month, 3pm 4:30pm
ICP&P office, 4601 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 8, Washington, DC 20008
This study group is for those interested in learning more about interpersonal theory and technique. We will read Ferenczi, Sullivan, Fiscalini, Mann, Wolstein and others, depending on interest. Emphasis will be placed on locating interpersonal theory within the context of other relational theories, including self psychology. Participants are also encouraged to bring in case material spurred by the readings.
Mindfulness Meditation
William Harman, PhD williamfharman@verizon.net; 202-986-3828
1st and 3rd Monday of every month from 6:30pm8pm beginning Sept. 12, 2011
2701 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 606, Washington, DC (Across from the Woodley Park Metro)
This is a new study group for clinicians interested in learning more about mindfulness meditation and how to integrate it into their therapy practices. There are many levels of integration - from just using it yourself to deepen your listening skills to using guided meditations with your clients/patients for specific purposes. Although there will be a list of suggested readings, the group will decide on readings either from the list or from other selections suggested by group members. Although primarily a study group, we may choose to practice some experiential exercises together and discuss how to apply what we're learning together to specific cases.

This kick-off event gives us a chance to come together as a community to renew ongoing relationships as well as to welcome new members. Members-in-Training and individuals who have joined ICP&P during the last year will be introduced. In addition, we are planning to have a town hall meeting, in which members can participate in open discussion about ICP&P, including the year's upcoming programs, planning for future programs and other areas of interest or concern to the ICP&P membership community. The potluck has always been an informal, lively, and fun event with lots of great food!
As our potluck will be held on the 10th anniversary of September 11th, we will take a moment as a community to observe silence in commemoration of that day.
