October 2010
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Roger Segalla and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
This summer the ICP&P Board created four new committees to facilitate the work of our institute. These committees are now being formed and starting the work of developing their mission statements, structures and short and long term goals. Please consider becoming involved in one of these committees. Whether you want an activity that involves other people or one that is more solitary, there are roles that suit your needs.
Faculty/Supervisor Committee
This Committee, which will be initially chaired by Leslie Smith, LCSW, has been charged with primary responsibility for developing and maintaining a strong and diverse faculty of experienced, high quality instructors and supervisors. The tasks associated with the achievement of these goals might included, but should not be limited to, the following: the development and dissemination of faculty guidelines, the development and implementation of a faculty orientation process and a Faculty Handbook, the creation of a faculty and supervisor vetting process, and the development of faculty and supervisor training, and in-service programs.
Community Outreach Committee
This Committee, which will be initially chaired by Jeffery Jay, Ph.D., will plan and execute specific activities designed to bring the wealth of professional expertise of our members to the surrounding communities. One example of this kind of activity is the recently established ICP&P Low Fee Referral Service which is currently run by Susan Gorman, LCSW. Other activities might include events such as presentations on Infant and Child Development, Parenting Skills, Relationship Communication Workshops, Coping with a Mentally Ill Family Member, etc.
Marketing and Publicity Committee
This Committee, which will be initially chaired by Sharon Ballard, LCSW, will be charged with developing a cohesive publicity and marketing strategy for ICP&P and for the conferences and other events we sponsor each year. This committee will also coordinate our efforts to market our three training programs. This committee will continue the work of the ICP&P Branding Committee which is currently working to contract with a designer to develop a new institute logo and branding materials (letterhead, website, etc.).
Fundraising Committee
This committee, which will be initially chaired by Martha Blechar Gibbons, Ph.D., R.N., will plan and execute activities designed to raise funds to support the work of our institute, conference and training scholarships and our community outreach efforts. One example currently being considered is an event involving a production staged by the Red Well Theater Group http://redwelltheater.com which is a very exciting dramatic reading group that is produced and directed by one of our members, Bob Schulte, MSW.
Two existing committees are also in need of volunteers. The CE Committee, Chaired by Eleanor Howe, is looking for someone to take responsibility for summarizing the information obtained on the program evaluation forms. Finally, the ICP&P library committee needs a new chairperson. Responsibilities include ordering materials and stocking incoming journals and book donations.
If you have a specific interest in being a part of one of these new or existing committees please send an email to Morgan Theriot, the ICP&P Administrator at icpeastadmin@att.net
Note from the Secretary
Leslie Westbrook
In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some highlights from the September meeting:
- The Treasurer's Report was reviewed and accepted. The budget year changed during the summer. The Board will make an effort to save $5,000.00 in all future years.
- The total paid membership may go as high as 262 when all dues are paid.
- Fifteen Study Groups are basically full, with 105 participants. Some ongoing groups are not included in this number. Five Study Groups offer continuing education credits.
- Future programs were discussed. The Self Psychology Institute scheduled for 9/2011-5/2012 is in the planning stages. The Stolorow program (November 2010) is being finalized. Possible other programs for the year 9/2012-5/2013 were reviewed.
- Committees of the Board were discussed, as Roger Segalla and the Board look for chairs for Community Outreach, Fund Raising, Research and Faculty.
- A Member-in-Training Board Representative will be voted on and the new person will be introduced at the October meeting.

New Study Group Available
Transference and countertransference phenomena are now understood in ways that are very different from their original conceptualizations as formulated by Freud. This study group will examine these ideas as they evolved from the context of distortion and obstacle to constituting primary data for understanding the patient's intrapsychic and interpsychic worlds. Readings will include classical papers by Racker and Searles as well as the more contemporary writings of Gill, Hoffman, Hirsch, Bromberg, Renik, Ehrenberg and other theorists whose work is of interest to participants. Group members will be encouraged to discuss their clinical work as it relates to these ideas.
The group will meet at the home of Tybe Diamond at 4707 Connecticut Ave., NW, Ste. 205, Washington, DC. Tybe Diamond and Rick Ogden will serve as co-leaders for the group. The first meeting of the group will be on Friday, October, 22nd from 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Please contact Tybe at 202-966-1381 or at ibtybe@aol.com if you are interested in joining this study group.
