November 2010

Note from the Director and Co-Director

Roger Segalla and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf

Building on the success of the Relational Perspectives Institute (RPI), ICP&P is planning another one-year training institute for the 2011-2012 academic year. This institute, formally titled Self Psychology Institute: Forty Years of Growth and Innovation (SPI), will focus on the very latest thinking in psychoanalytic self psychology. Using a format similar to the RPI, the Self Psychology Institute will include four weekend events featuring leaders from contemporary psychoanalytic self psychology. However, unlike the RPI, the SPI weekends will include optional pre-conference seminars on Basic Self Psychology, Couples Therapy, Group Therapy and an overview of current Self Psychology, followed by full day Saturday presentations by the guest speakers.

The first Saturday, September 17, 2011, will feature infant researcher Dr. Frank Lachmann presenting: The Growth of the Individual: A View Through the Empathic Lens. The second Saturday, November 19, 2011, will feature our own Dr. Joseph Lichtenberg presenting: Affects, Intentions and Goals: A New Look at Motivations. The third Saturday, February 4, 2012, will feature Dr. Donna Orange presenting: Engagement and Developmental Enactment. The fourth and final Saturday, April 28, 2012, which will double as our Annual Conference, will feature both Dr. Judy Teicholz and Dr. Jim Fosshage presenting: The Clinical Challenge and How We Meet It: Conceptual Guidelines for What We Say and What We Do.

The format for the Saturday conferences will provide the participants the same kind of on-going discussion and integration groups that were so popular during the RPI. Also like the RPI, this new one-year institute will be held at the Cosmos Club on Massachusetts Avenue NW. Space in the institute will be limited to 100 participants. Please look for the SPI brochure, containing more complete information, to arrive in February 2011. In the meantime, feel free to contact either of us, or institute chairs Joe Lichtenberg and Rosemary Segalla, with any questions.

Note from the Secretary

Leslie Westbrook

In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some highlights from the October meeting:

  • The minutes of the September Board Meeting were accepted.
  • The budget was reviewed and the Board voted to take $10,000 from savings to use in this year's budget to handle pre-conference cash flow demands for the 2011-2012 Self Psychology Institute.
  • The Board discussed the Shelby Conference on Creating a Viable Sexual Orientation and the need to provide participants more opportunity to process thoughts and feelings about the subject matter. It was noted that attendance was down for the conference and that in the future Members in Training need to be encouraged to attend the meeting with the presenter after lunch.
  • The Bruce Wine Memorial Conference is on track in terms of planning.
  • The Board considered changing the title of the various training programs. The Member in Training representative will consult with all the members of the training programs to determine whether there is a desire to change the titles.
  • Membership reported that 55 persons still needed to be contacted to determine their intentions regarding rejoining ICP&P this year. Study Groups for the two year cycle are underway.

Bruce Wine Memorial Conference

Elizabeth M. Carr

The first Bruce Wine Memorial Conference will be held at the National 4-H Conference Center on December 4, 2010. By now, the beautiful brochure announcing the conference should be in your hands. If you have not received a brochure, please inform Morgan Theriot, ICP&P Administrator, and she can mail you a brochure or you can go to the ICP&P website: www.icpeast.org for information and registration.

We are very proud to announce that William Coburn is our featured speaker and will be presenting his ideas about Psychoanalytic Complexity Theory. Dr. Coburn is on the forefront of exciting innovations in psychoanalytic thinking and clinical practice. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology and a highly respected leader in both the IAPSP and IARPP communities. The conference is organized with two small group sessions in order to provide an opportunity to engage in lively conversation with colleagues.

Bruce Wine (1948–2008) was an important part of the founding and early success of ICP&P. He was revered as an inspiring teacher and supervisor. There is a biographical description of Bruce in the conference brochure that will tell you more about him.

This conference is co-sponsored by ICP&P and the Bruce Wine Memorial Fund. With pride and gratitude we dedicate this conference to Bruce – our friend and colleague.

New Study Group Available

Transference and countertransference phenomena are now understood in ways that are very different from their original conceptualizations as formulated by Freud. This study group will examine these ideas as they evolved from the context of distortion and obstacle to constituting primary data for understanding the patient's intrapsychic and interpsychic worlds. Readings will include classical papers by Racker and Searles as well as the more contemporary writings of Gill, Hoffman, Hirsch, Bromberg, Renik, Ehrenberg and other theorists whose work is of interest to participants. Group members will be encouraged to discuss their clinical work as it relates to these ideas.

The group will meet at the home of Tybe Diamond at 4707 Connecticut Ave., NW, Ste. 205, Washington, DC. Tybe Diamond and Rick Ogden will serve as co-leaders for the group. The group will meet once a month on a Friday from 1:00-2:30pm (the particular Friday will be announced at a later date). Please contact Tybe at 202-966-1381 or at ibtybe@aol.com if you are interested in joining this study group. The group is limited to 9 members.
