December 2011

Note from the Director and Co-Director

Roger Segalla and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf

As an institute with a significant self psychological orientation, ICP&P is part of a larger international network of psychoanalytic institutes and clinicians which are oriented toward the theories and clinical applications of contemporary self-psychology. This group is represented by the International Association of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPSP) which produces an annual international conference that brings together traditional and contemporary self psychologists to present and discuss new developments in psychoanalytic treatment. Next year, in October 2012, ICP&P is serving as host to the IAPSP International Conference which will be chaired by our own Joseph Lichtenberg, MD. The 2012 Conference is titled: "Is Self an Illusion?" and is already promising to be an exciting event filled with many nationally and internationally recognized speakers. We also expect to have a large contingent of ICP&P members involved in moderating paper sessfdions and doing case presentations. This event, which will be held at the Marriott Hotel, will begin on Thursday October 18th and end on Sunday October 21st.

The IAPSP is a membership organization and there are a number of advantages to joining. First, members receive a subscription to International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IJPSP), which is published by the IAPSP, as well as substantial member discounts for subscriptions to psychoanalytic journals. In addition, members of IAPSP also get significant discounts on conference fees, enrollment in the IAPSP list serve (a great referral source), access to the IAPSP eForum , access to online forums, a 20% member discount on all psychoanalytic books purchased through Mental Health Resources, and an opportunity to run for and elect members of the IAPSP International Council.

This is a great time to join the IAPSP and reap the benefits of membership in this thriving organization of like-minded clinicians. For more information on the IAPSP you can go to their website at: http://psychologyoftheself.com/iapsp/ To go directly to the membership application go to: http://iapsp.org/iapsp/join.php

On behalf of the ICP&P Board, we wish you a festive holiday season. We look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Note from the Secretary

Leslie Westbrook

In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some highlights from the November meeting:

  • The Board voted to co-sponsor with the Washington School of Psychiatry a conference on March 16 and 17 based on the Minnesota Longitudinal Studies featuring speaker L. Alan Sroufe, author of The Development of the Person. Contributors to the program will include Mauricio Cortina, Elizabeth Carr and Marie Hellinger.
  • Roger Segalla reported that Cherian Verghese has invited an authority on multiculturalism to be the principal speaker at the Annual Meeting in the spring of 2013. A clinician will also be part of the program.
  • The Board discussed possible speakers for the 2012-13season. Russell Carr and Doris Brothers will be asked to present at one of the half day conferences.
  • The Board also discussed the possibility of sponsoring a day-long conference on the Sunday before the IAPSP Conference in Washington, D.C. in October of 2012. Joe Lichtenberg suggested the topic be 'The Role of Play in All Things Human". There was conditional support for the idea. It will be further explored.
  • Membership Chair Martha Blechar Gibbons reported that 239 members have now paid their membership dues for this year. Roger Segalla suggested that there be a meeting of Study Group Leaders to maintain a better connection with the Membership Committee.
  • On December 5th there will a meeting for faculty of the various Training Programs.
  • Janet Dante, Treasurer, reported that while the budget is in fine shape, there were only fifteen non-ICP&P members at the Lachman and at the Lichtenberg conferences. (Earlier in the meeting the Board had recommended that there be no special advertising of the "After the Affair" Conference because of the high expense of putting an ad in the Washington Post.)

    Note from Coordinator of Programs

    Patricia Olsen

Our next event is the third weekend of the Self Psychology Institute, which features a pre-conference session devoted to self psychology and groups on Friday, February 3 and a full-day Saturday program entitled Engagement and Developmental Enactment with Donna Orange, PhD as the main speaker. Registration information is available later in the Newsletter, on the ICP&P website, or by contacting Morgan Theriot at icpeastadmin@att.net.

    Note From Psychoanalytic Training Program
    Reading Group for Prospective Members-in-Training

Elizabeth M. Carr and Linda Kanefield

We are pleased to announce that we are holding a series of meetings for anyone interested in learning more about the ICP&P Psychoanalytic Training Program. For the first two sessions, we have chosen an exciting group of papers organized around the issue of mutual recognition in the analytic encounter, including papers by Donna Orange, Jessica Benjamin, Malcolm Slavin and Phillip Ringstrom. In this series of papers, the authors engage in a complex examination of the interface between Orange's and Benjamin's broad understandings of the concept of recognition in development and in clinical interaction. We believe our discussion will be of great value to those individuals who will be attending the February 4, 2012 Self Psychology Institute session featuring Donna Orange speaking on the subject of Engagement and Developmental Enactments. All are welcome!

During the reading group, there will also be an opportunity to ask questions and talk about the experience of doing psychoanalytic training at ICP&P. The meetings will be on Sunday afternoons from 3:30 - 5:30 on January 22, February 26, and March 25. We will meet at the home of Elizabeth Carr at 701 Woodside Parkway in Silver Spring, Maryland. If you are interested, or know anyone who is interested in joining us for the reading group, please contact Linda Kanefield at 301-654-2645 or kaneschn@gmail.com. We will send the readings to those who would like to participate in the group. If you want further information, please contact Linda.

This has been an exciting year for the ICP&P Psychoanalytic Training Program as several of our current trainees have written, published, and had papers accepted to be presented at international conferences. Russ Carr, MD gave the plenary talk at the IAPSP Conference in Los Angeles, in October 2011 and Shoshana Ringel, PhD will be giving a paper at the IARPP conference in NYC in March 2012. We are very proud of them and believe their accomplishments speak to the creative and stimulating atmosphere of our training program.

    New Member Introduction

    Martha Blechar Gibbons

ICP&P welcomes Robert Walters, who has been a licensed psychologist since 2000. Three years ago Robert relocated to Washington, D.C. from New Jersey, where he had maintained a private practice. He was affiliated with Jersey Shore University Medical Center, providing supervision for psychotherapy and psychological testing to pre-doctoral interns. Growing weary of the New Jersey suburbs, Robert made a change of life decision: he moved to the capitol city, where some of his relatives already resided.

Robert currently practices in Dupont Circle, where he provides psychotherapy to adults and couples. He treats a population manifesting mood disorders, trauma, adjustment issues, and a spectrum of personality disorders. Proposing an expansion of his practice, Robert intends to include psychological evaluation.

Having developed an interest in self psychology, Robert learned about ICP&P one year ago, and was elated to discover a self psychology institute right in his backyard!

Robert shares that the move from New Jersey has been an unfolding process of sociological adjustment, but so far he is pleased with his decision. His desire is to become integrated into a community that will provide opportunities for networking, professional stimulation, and growth. Hopefully Robert will find this…and more… as he settles into the ICP&P environs.

    2011-2012 Directories

    Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf

The 2011-2012 printed membership directories are hot off the presses and were distributed to attendees of the December 10 conference. Remaining directories will be distributed through study groups or by mail.

When you receive your directory, please review your entry and send any edits or corrections to Morgan at icpeastadmin@att.net. Once these are collected, the information will be sent to the membership, along with information regarding members who joined after the directory went to the printer.

I thought it might be a good time to explain how the individual entries are formatted; this is intended to help members interpret directory listings. (The information that follows is also included on the page 1 of the printed directory).

For the Population Served category, responses are listed in chronological order from youngest to oldest (not order of preference).

For the Therapeutic Mode category, responses are listed in alphabetical order (not order of preference). Individual therapy is assumed and therefore is not listed separately.

For the Specialties category, responses are listed in the order specified by the member, with as many items as space allowed. If no order was indicated, responses are placed in alphabetical order.

In order to minimize repetition, responses appear in only one category. For example, "Couples" is listed under Therapeutic Mode, not under Specialties. Similarly, "Children" is listed under Populations Served and not under Specialties.

I would welcome feedback about the formatting procedure and/or suggestions of ways to increase the utility of the directory listings

    Thoughts on Being a Therapist

    Lauren Brandt and Jeffrey Jay

Feelings, thoughts, reflections, moments of humor, moments of insight, moments of relief, joy, victory, or defeat in being a therapist?

We would like to introduce a new occasional column in the newsletter, "Thoughts on Being A Therapist," as a space for ICP&P members to share reflections relating to this audacious, humbling and poignant work of being a therapist. The notes should be no longer than 400 words, but can also be much shorter. In addition to small lessons learned, we welcome personal writing to complement the theory, training, and hard work of treatment. Haikus and less formal expressions are welcome, but no identifying information of clients or breaches of confidentiality, please. Submit your writing for this column to Lauren Brandt or Jeffrey Jay at LBJLS@rcn.com or jeffjayphd@aol.com.

    News and Notes

ICP&P Yahoo Member Listserv - ICP&P maintains a member listserv which is intended as a place for members to post information (like conferences sponsored by other organizations that would be of interest to ICP&P members) or to ask for information regarding professional issues or resources. The method of posting items on the listserv is as follows: go to Yahoo groups on the Yahoo website and find the group "ICP-Info" under "My Groups". Click that group name. You will enter the ICP&P Yahoo group for members. To send a message, click on "Messages" then click "Post".
