Note from the Editor: Becky Peterson

It’s September already! Vacation is over, the pools are closing, school is starting and… it’s time to pay your ICP&P dues! Many of you are facing the onerous task of sorting through the piles of paper that have accumulated on your desks during vacation. For those of you with school-aged kids, you are in the midst of filling out countless forms (why can’t they use the emergency care card from last year?) and writing way too many checks. So before you succumb to “check-writing fatigue,” please take the time to send me your dues payment and your corrected directory page. Thank you!

Note from the Director: Wendy Fischer

I hope this finds you in good spirits after a replenishing summer. Even though there are still technically two weeks remaining before the end of summer, Labor Day is the transition point for me. Soon after Labor Day, the slower pace of summer becomes a distant memory as vacations are over and meetings and conferences start up again. Similar to January 1, Labor Day can also feel like a fresh start. I find myself making resolutions just as I do at the New Year. Unfortunately, these too often fall by the wayside. But I am still hopeful that I will actually get the piles on my desk under control this fall. If not, they will have to stay on my list for the New Year.

This fall marks the beginning of another two-year cycle for ICP&P. The new Board will have its first meeting on September 14, and a new set of study groups begins this month. As I prepare for my own study group, I have been thinking about what an important part of ICP&P study groups have been. When we first organized ICP&P, participation in a study group was a requirement of membership. This made us unique in that all members had regular contact with at least eight to ten other members. Rotating study groups every two years further expanded members’ familiarity with each other. Exploring ideas and concepts together and struggling with difficult clinical cases are not only intellectually stimulating and technically useful, but also promote feelings of connectedness among group members. I think this has served to make ICP&P a more cohesive group and has contributed significantly to the friendly and warm atmosphere that has become a hallmark of our organization. Although belonging to a study group is no longer a requirement, I hope that members will continue to choose to be part of one. Particularly for new members, it is an excellent way to begin to feel integrated into ICP&P. If you have not yet joined, I encourage you to contact Kathy Beck and sign up so that you can attend the September meeting. In this era of managed care, it is immensely reassuring to have the support of colleagues who are committed to finding the most effective ways to treat patients and are not willing to succumb to pressures to resort to a quick fix when it is not in the best interest of the patient.

As the year begins, I look forward to seeing you on October 16 at our special conference honoring Rosemary Segalla. Brochures were mailed at the end of August, so everyone should have received one by now. This will be an extraordinary opportunity to increase our understanding of the role of spirituality in the psychotherapeutic process. It will also be a fitting tribute to the enormous contribution that Rosemary has made to ICP&P.

Note from the Programs Coordinator: Sheila Cahill

Wow! We have exciting news about our Annual Conference. This year’s topic is “Developing the Self in the Context of the Couple.” Marian Solomon, a prolific author and internationally-recognized couples therapist has accepted our invitation to present to us. She and David Shaddock, whom some of you heard at the Self Psychology Conference a few years ago, will make a terrific duo, and we are working on plans to incorporate small discussion groups, so participants can work up close with each of our speakers. Please mark your calendars to SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, April 16, 2005.

Reservations are rolling in for the October 16 conference, “Integrating Spiritual Perspectives in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis: Exploring the Mystical Traditions.” Make sure to get yours in early, in order to obtain a seat in the Workshop of your choice.

Please look at the Upcoming Events section below so that you can mark other important ICP&P events on your calendar. It promises to be a wonderful year, and I look forward to seeing many of you at our events.

THE INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY
PSYCHOTHERAPY & PSYCHOANALYSIS
OFFERS
THREE SHORT COURSES FALL 2004

ICP&P is dedicated to providing its membership and the psychoanalytic community with learning opportunities that will deepen clinical work, from both theoretical and experiential perspectives. Our membership has expressed a lively interest in a wide range of topics, and suggested that these be presented in a format that is something more than a conference and less than a school semester. The “Short Course” has been our answer.

Suggestions for topics for future courses are welcome. If you have a topic that you are interested in learning about or teaching, please call 202-686-9300, Ext. 5 or e-mail Jane Jones at farhill@csi.com.

COURSE 1: Using Self Psychology Concepts to Treat Eating Disorders

Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder) are extremely complicated dynamically and present many dilemmas for the treating clinician because the stakes are so high. Using self-psychological techniques and concepts, the aim of this course is to introduce participants to working with eating disordered patients. It will focus on understanding their medical and psychosocial components as well as their psychodynamics and implications for intervention. Participants are encouraged to bring in cases for discussion.

5 weeks: October 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19
Friday, 9:30 -11:00 am in McLean
Fees: $100 members, $150 nonmembers

Adina Shapiro, LICSW, BCD, is in private practice and has over 20 years experience in counseling, teaching and management in mental health settings. One of her areas of specialty is eating disorders, where she has provided individual and group therapy to adults and adolescents.

COURSE 2: A Contemporary Perspective on Dreams

This course will integrate new discoveries about sleep and dreaming with self psychological and psychodynamic perspectives. Reviewing the research on the mind/brain processing of subliminal and supraliminal stimuli, the course will cover dream construction and dream interpretation, focusing on dream images as they appear in the manifest content of the dream. Transference interpretations, self-states and the way the dream is a part of the free associative process of the session will also be studied within the manifest content of the dreamwork.

3 weeks: November 22, 29, December 13
Monday, 7:30 - 9:00 pm in Cabin John, MD
Fees: $60 members, $90 nonmembers

Fonya Helm, Ph.D., ABPP is a faculty member and supervising analyst at ICP&P. A graduate of the New York Freudian Society’s training program in psychoanalysis, Washington, DC, she is in private practice in Cabin John, MD.

COURSE 3: An Introduction to Hypnosis: Techniques for Managing Stress: Awareness, Mindfulness, and Self-hypnosis

The need to effectively manage stress is a major health concern for most people. We often see patients in therapy who are either overworked, overwhelmed, anxious, or have resorted to self-medication with alcohol or drugs. Unfortunately, many psychotherapists view stress management and anxiety reduction techniques as “too behavioral” to be compatible with dynamically-oriented psychotherapies. In fact, the inability to manage stress can be conceptualized as a failure of self-soothing ability, and as such is an essential focus for treatment. This one session didactic/experiential workshop will serve as an introduction to hypnosis and mindfulness-based techniques for managing stress. Participants will learn how some of these techniques can be utilized with patients in a manner that enhances therapy of any orientation.

Friday, November 5, 1:00-3:00 pm in Bethesda
Sharon B. Spiegel, Ph.D., ABPP, a psychologist in private practice in Bethesda, is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Maryland and past President of the Washington, D.C. Society of Clinical Hypnosis

**********************************************************************************************************

CE credit hours will be awarded to participants. ICP&P is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. ICP&P maintains responsibility for the program. ICP&P has been approved by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners to offer Category 1 continuing education credit. With the Maryland Board approval, CE credit hours awarded by ICP&P may also be claimed by social workers licensed in Virginia and the District of Columbia.

HAVE YOU HEARD?

We are pleased to announce a new service for ICP&P members. Because we recognize the value to our members of being able to communicate directly with one another, we have decided to create a forum to facilitate that communication. We have established an Internet user group on Yahoo, which is open only to ICP&P members.

Many of you are part of user groups and understand how they work. For those of you who aren’t, here is a quick explanation. When you sign up to be part of the “icp-info” group your e-mail address will be added to the group. Once you are signed up, it is very easy to send a message to the entire group. Simply type icp-info@yahoogroups.com in your address line, and all ICP&P members enrolled in the group will receive your e-mail. Remember, only members of the group may send e-mails to the group, and only ICP&P members are eligible to join the group.

You should have received e-mail inviting you to become a member of the group. If you didn’t receive the e-mail and would like to be part of the group, please notify Becky Peterson at icpeastadmin@att.net She will send you another invitation, and all you will have to do to join is simply click “Reply” and the “Send” button in your e-mail program. You will receive an e-mail confirmation that you have joined the group. You may withdraw from or rejoin the group at any time.

We envision this user group to be a way to request and share information that wouldn’t necessarily go into the newsletter. It is a way for a community of busy professionals to connect with one another between meetings. It could be used to share information about other professional organizations and their activities, present ideas that are important to you, solicit input on issues that arise in your work, etc. Your feedback and participation are important to the success of the group. If you have any questions, please contact Becky Peterson, who will be moderating the group.
