Infant Observation is more than just looking. The observer takes in the physical and emotional experiences of the baby and its family and attempts to construct meaning from these experiences. Infant observation promotes an appreciation for the processes that underlie child development, and thus, issues relating to psychotherapy with adolescents and adults. This short course will include writings by Fonagy, Beebe, Lachmann, Almond, Reid, Ellis, Rustin, Waddell, Casement and Levy.
Based on the content of this short course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the relationship between infant observation and psychotherapy with adult patients.
- Relate differing theories of psychological development to infant observations.
- Identify and explain the clinical significance of differing modes of communication.
- Employ observational, reflective and therapeutic skills in their clinical work.
- Explain the relationship between infant observation and attachment theory.
- Improve their psychotherapy skills by improving their ability to observe and listen without interpreting.
- Identify differences in race and culture in infant observation.
