About ICP&P

Mission

Our mission is to advance contemporary self and relational psychologies in an open, welcoming professional community where high standards of scholarship are supported by a respect for dialogue in the learning process. We also compare and contrast the newer, dynamic foci of self and relational therapies with the traditional models of psychoanalysis. We are proud of our vibrant, intellectual and professional community with over 200 members from diverse disciplines who participate in training, monthly study groups, and cutting edge professional programs led by invited, renowned mental health theorists and practitioners.

We hope that the self and relational therapy at the core of our training and learning, as well as the warm ambiance of professional collegiality that we cherish, will lead you to further explore this web site and contact us with any further questions at 202-686-9300.

ICP&P is an open and growing professional community. We welcome you to consider joining us as a member, or to participate in one of our many workshops and conferences.

Programs

History

The Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis (ICP&P) was founded in 1994 by a multi-disciplined group of mental health professionals. Their purpose was to create a friendly and respectful community for psychotherapists to explore both the contemporary theories and techniques of self and relational psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. In 1994, ICP&P began to offer training in psychotherapy. In 1998, ICP&P began to offer psychoanalytic training and in 2000 began to offer training in couples. ICP&P remains the only Institute to offer diverse training programs with a focus on self psychology and other contemporary therapeutic models in the Mid-Atlantic States.

ICP&P has now grown into a vibrant community of more than 200 members from varied disciplines who uphold the highest standards of training in these therapeutic approaches, while providing a warm and collegial environment for mental health professionals.

ICP&P continues to uphold its mission of providing the resources for advanced professional development through its three training programs: psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, and couples therapy. These programs are open to the greater mental health community. In addition to its core training programs, ICP&P invites renowned scholars to lead focused conferences in specific mental health areas. Recent speakers include: Jessica Benjamin, Malcolm Slavin, Daniel Stern, Beatrice Beebe, Estelle Shane, Charles McCormick, James Fosshage, Judith Teicholz, Owen Renick, and many others.

The Institute is particularly proud of its diverse, on-going study groups that combine intellectual rigor and collegiality. The study groups are designed specifically by, and for, ICP&P members. Fifteen to twenty study groups meet for a two year cycle. They provide an adjunct setting for members to study topics in depth with a small group of colleagues. Members may choose to belong to more than one group. They are free of charge to members and offer CEU credits. (Please refer to our membership page to see the wide range of offerings).

ICP&P continues to grow as a professional organization that looks forward to providing new theory, research, and techniques to its members and to the community.
